Hegemonic Masculinity as a Barrier Towards Degrowth Transformation

Workshop on May 22, 18.30-21.00 at Kulturzentrum 4lthangrund
with Tadeáš Žďárský

From the dominance of fossil fuels and heavy industries to car culture and high-meat diets, many of the systems driving ecological collapse are deeply intertwined with traditional ideals of masculinity. Degrowth movement is not therefore not only challenging capitalism, but also much of the values associated with traditional masculinity.

Why are white men disproportionately represented among climate deniers? How do ideals of toughness, control, and dominance shape individual and collective responses to the climate crisis? In what ways does hegemonic masculinity discourage vulnerability, interdependence, and the acceptance of ecological limits? How are figures like Elon Musk and Andrew Tate—through techno-optimism and hypermasculine posturing—symptomatic of a broader backlash against environmental and social change? And ultimately, what possibilities exist for reshaping masculinities so that they support, rather than obstruct, ecological and social justice?

In this participatory workshop, we will explore the personal and systemic impacts of hegemonic masculinity on our lives, economies, and the crises we face. Through discussion and collective reflection, we will also consider pathways for transforming masculinities so they align with sustainable and just futures.

Participation is free of charge, donations welcome!
