The Doughnut
It’s time for a new economic paradigm – one that enables human flourishing without undermining the health of our planet. Both Degrowth and Kate Raworth’s ‘Doughnut Economics‘ present concrete visions of an economy that puts people and planet first, rather than indulging in “‘fairy tales of eternal growth“’ (Greta Thunberg). Striking a balance between the essentials of life and the ecological limits of our planet, the Doughnut defines the space both environmentally safe and socially just space where humanity can thrive.
Our vision: Donut City Wien
With our new project – ‘Doughnut City Wien’ – we aim to bridge these two concepts on a city level. Our vision: the City of Vienna joins Amsterdam in embracing the ‘doughnut model’, ensuring everyone in the city has access to a good quality of life, and to do so without putting unsustainable pressure on the environment. In a much-lauded step, Amsterdam officially committed to become the first Doughnut City in the world. Other cities, including Brussels, Copenhagen, Austin (Texas), and Portland (Oregon) are set to follow the example of Amsterdam.
Our aim is to form a broad ‘Vienna Doughnut Coalition’ which unites the diverse social movements, organisations and dedicated individuals that are already fighting for a just and sustainable future.
Where do we stand?
Having defined our key goals and set up working groups, we are currently in the process of elaborating our outreach and media strategies as well as planning our first concrete activities.
